Forword to the book by Jane Hersey,

Today’s parents – especially parents of children who are plagued with serious health challenges or learning problems or behave in ways that don’t seem to make sense – need all the help they can get. Prospective parents need help too, in seeking to prevent their yet unborn children from falling victim to a variety of physical, mental and emotional afflictions.

Why are so many American children now being diagnosed with such problems as asthma, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, autism, mood swings and depression, sleep disturbances, behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, chronic ear infections obesity and diabetes? The approach most practitioners take in trying to address the root causes of these conditions is based on a few conventional assumptions that are just not supported by good science.

One such assumption is that children have always had these problems, but we simply have not been as aware of them in the past -- a theory that’s hard to defend, given the alarming surge in health and behavioral anomalies. Another assumption is that some mysterious, inherent brain defect may be to blame – speculation that doesn’t take into account the many correctable external factors that may be affecting our kids’ brains and nervous systems. Then there’s an additional assumption – that if indeed the child has an abnormality of some type, the only way to treat it is with continued doses of powerful drugs that simply cover up the symptoms and may even cause additional harm.

What happens in such cases is that children who are actually suffering from allergies or sensitivities to various chemicals and toxic substances in their diets and surroundings may never have the real source of their problem identified. Those who have been damaged by exposure to heavy metals or pesticides, for instance, or who have a vitamin or mineral deficiency might not receive the kind of therapy they need, or have the actual chemical culprits removed from their environment.

Practitioners with such deeper knowledge are out there, but, unfortunately, still in a minority. Therefore, it falls on parents themselves to be aware of the whole picture, to try to understand why a child might be having problems, and to create the kind of regimen and environment that will prevent such problems from afflicting their children in the first place.

This book is a beacon designed to guide you past the many toxic pitfalls facing today’s parents -- a do-it-yourself manual based on the proposition that raising chemical-free kids is the best way of assuring they’ll grow into healthy and well-adjusted adults.
